I was on a long vacation and with Coronavirus unleashing its beast mode across the country, the government had announced a complete lockdown of all activities. Since I had applied for my vacation long back, I did not want it to be interrupted and I continued to be on my vacation. Within few hours of the country being in lockdown, we all received urgent mail from our company stating that we should continue to connect from home until further notice and the lockdown will not impact our jobs or salaries. I was completely relieved after reading this mail and the mail meant the most because the mail assured that our jobs are safe and there would not be any change in salary structure. Initial days were really scary and with no communication in emails from my team, I was getting nervous, and, in the meantime, I called my colleague to check in about things happening in the team and any updates from my manager due to COVID-19 situation gripping across places. No updates from on-site team even after multiple reminders

After waiting for the whole day to get an update from the on-site team, I had no other option left but to drop a note to the on-site team stating that I can support only for next few days and post that I have planned vacation coming up and the delivery team has to take ownership. In addition, I have also mentioned that with no updates for each version shared, from the on-site team, it is getting difficult for the offshore team to work on the rough drafts and make iterative changes. With these strong words, I was also getting nervous about its impact, as it would result in two different outcomes. Struggling with new service request and people

After a long struggle to support my colleagues for completion of the service request, finally I got the go-ahead signal from the manager to work on the new request and I got very limited time to convert the document to the right shape. But, the idiots with whom I worked had other ideas, whenever I finish and send a document for review there will be no comments and the next day, they would join calls and start providing new suggestions. The delivery person with whom I worked was so irritating that he was expecting me to work on each and every part of the document. At one point I was just waiting for the competition of service request and one more most frustrating part in this service request was that the team which was supposed to be helping me was actually questioning my work and was trying to add-on as much as work possible. However, the delivery person idiot has called my manager and has stated that lot of work to be done and whatever work I have done in the weekend would be irrelevant and doesn’t match the client requirements. Ignoring work on my vacation for irritating opportunity

The on-site delivery lead was not in a position to hear what my manager was conveying and was commanding the entire team to share the updated final version of the deck by the end of that day. I was completely taken aback by this comment from on-site delivery lead, as we have no information available either in offshore or from account perspective and to add fuel over my frustration, I was on vacation on the day. I was completely taken aback and was completely clueless about my next action, while heated conversation was going on in the call I was in complete mute and didn’t even utter a word about the progress. Discussion with furious delivery lead and argument

The delivery lead was asking me about each and every state and was expecting me to update it based on my knowledge, however it should be from the offshore delivery POC from his expertise and based on his assessment done earlier. At one point, the discussion moved towards offshore delivery POC and he was blasting him as well for not having the estimates in place for today’s call. The offshore delivery POC was trying to convince the offshore delivery lead about the short turnaround time and the available information shared by the onsite team. But the offshore delivery lead was in no mood to hear out any of the excuses and wanted the updates to be done before the call. The time duration was only 30 minutes between the call and this comment, we immediately got off the call and started working on the comments shared by him. No recognition or acknowledgement of support from irritating delivery POC

I have been working with this irritating delivery POC for almost 2 weeks and every time I work hard to exceed my own expectations to get some acknowledgement for the work. Lastly, at one point of time, I wanted to escape from this opportunity as early as possible and have planned vacation for one-week post this work. I was closing off most of my work and was sharing as many slides as possible, so I would not be disturbed during my vacation. Finally, the opportunity considered as closed and I was off for my vacation. After so many hardships and the deck finally presented to the client, I was not even acknowledged by this irritating delivery person for the effort, which I have put in for finalizing the deck. Tight deadline opportunity with lot of work

Once the call got over from the opportunity, I knew there are lot of work that has to be completed within next few hours and without wasting any time, I called the delivery person and conveyed that I would start creating the structure and we can customize it based on the client requirements. So, the day was going on with the tight schedule and I had to complete lot of work within short span of time and due to proficiency in the team and in deck, I was able to complete work faster than anticipated and was able bring the deck in much better version than the earlier and shared it with the entire account team for review. The call was scheduled very late in the night and the meeting invite was shared by that delivery person and when the entire account team was on the call, I get call from that delivery person stating that she would not be able to join the call and I should drive the call. I was shell shocked to hear that response and I was able to manage only first few mins in the call and later I directed it another delivery person to drive it. Monday morning blues with couple of opportunities

So, after taking office call on my way back to home on a Friday weekend, I had to return back to office on Monday as I had two opportunities on my plate and had to work with nagging delivery expert. I was riding back to office from my native and was worried about the couple of opportunities I had to work and was hoping to close all opportunities soon. I logged in to my office laptop and was in for a surprise that due to lack expertise in client defined application landscape and I was back to square one with only one opportunity. And one such opportunity didn’t have much work for me and I requested the delivery expert to shared details with the accounts team directly. One more opportunity with new Team

After fighting hard with new delivery expert on new opportunity I was expecting at-least an acknowledgment from that delivery expert, as I have done all the work in the RFP and she didn’t even bother to assist me on framing the solution. So after the bitter experience with the new delivery expert I moved on and I have been assigned new opportunity to work on by my manager. The huge twist in this opportunity is that in initial mail the accounts team clearly detailed that they would require support even on weekends and they are on tight timelines to submit the opportunity to the client. I was taken a back a little, as I was scared about the expectation from this new account and level of support that would be required from my end. Difficult task started during rains

Now with no electricity, I had found simple trick for staying connected to internet and can browse as usual. I disconnected LAN cable from the modem and connected directly to my MacBook Pro and have been browsing through social networks and been watching YouTube videos. To sweeten it further and to show my billable hours for my office, I turned my MacBook Pro into hotspot and was connecting my mobile and office laptop with it. Around lunch I felt little bit pain of not having electricity, but still enjoying it myself with YouTube videos and social media updates. Time was running and still there was no sign of rain slowing up, so ultimately, I felt that the electricity is not going to be there for few more hours. 16. Calculating Salary revision

After downloading my salary revision letter, I immediately wanted to check my percentage hike and other relevant details. So, I opened the MAC shortcut and started to do some basic mathematical calculation to arrive at rough percentage hike I got for this year. I started with very low number as I don’t want to get disappointed a lot and it’s not the lowest number, I am relieved now. I went ahead with next number and continued till I got my exact numbers. Finally, I arrived at a medium percentage hike number and felt this would be my hike for this year and continued to my office. In office, everyone got their hike letters and we didn’t even spoke about it for first few hours. Later on, one of my colleagues initiated the discussion about the salary revision and was checking with me about some rough percentage hike. I gave him the number least to the median number and checked with him how much hike he had got. I was shocked to hear that his numbers were pretty much near my hike percentage and consoled myself that, he would have got better ratings than me. Continuing work with delivery expert

So, the kick-off calls for the complex opportunity started and as initial step we needed to share the questionnaire. To start off, I called this delivery expert to check his availability and convenient time to discuss to share the questions with the team. He conveyed he is little bit tied up and requested me to check with the old delivery expert, with whom I have good rapport. On the way to office

In office mail, I was shell shocked to know about important meeting that was scheduled that day and “Thank God” the meeting was cancelled. Had this meeting not cancelled, I would have been screwed up by my manager and all top leaders in the team? Since the meeting was all about discussion on the key opportunities and upcoming target for the whole year in the team.
